Basics |
NAME: Bartemius Benjamin Crouch, Jr. AGE/BIRTHDAY: 20 / August 27, 1960 BLOOD STATUS: Pureblood FORMER HOUSE: Slytherin/1979 OCCUPATION: Full-time Death Eater; former waiter at a small restaurant in Diagon Alley |
Relationships |
FAMILY: Bartemius Croutch, Sr. Not exactly Father Of The Year material. He's driven, diligent, and ambitious - all good traits, yes, but hearing about your father's newest career advances isn't much of a consolation when he misses your birthday to meet with people more important than you. Also a Ministry worker and outspoken enemy of the Dark Lord. If he does love his son, he doesn't show it. In Barty's eyes, Bartemius Sr. has never cared a whit about him. Rebecca Crouch. If there's ever been a more submissive, meek housewife in the history of the wizarding world, Barty hasn't heard of her. However, placed next to his father, she comes out stronger: at least she actually cared about her son. Rebecca came from a family just respectable enough for Bartemius Sr. to give her the time of day, and he married her not out of love, but in hopes that doing so would advance his social status. She still maintains the sad illusion that he's in love with her. SEXUALITY: Heterosexual, in theory. He's never actually dated anyone. SIGNIFICANT OTHER: None CHILDREN:: None. He wants them - in theory. They'd be nice to have, to further the bloodline and all that. In practice, they're loud and messy and are to be avoided. |
Politics |
LOYALTY/ALLIANCE: Death Eaters ROLE IN THE WAR: Barty is crazy smart. Not only does absorbs new information like a sponge, he immediately cross checks this new information with old information pulled from memory and is able to draw quick conclusions within moments of hearing it. He rarely, if ever, makes stupid mistakes; he is always completely devoted to the task at hand. As a highly skilled wizard for his age, he is equally capable of sitting back and playing the tactician and of actually going out into the field, and does his fair share of both. Barty is passionate about the Death Eaters' cause, and he's willing to go above and beyond to do his part. An ever growing sense of paranoia has resulted in his starting to study Occulumency. POLITICAL VIEWS: Some people are born to be wizards and witches, and some people aren't. You wouldn't expect a domesticated puppy to grow up into a wild wolf, would you? Such is the relationship between Muggles and wizards. Mudbloods may be able to use magic, but this is something to be rejected, not embraced; they are freaks of nature, not of what Barty refers to as "our kind", and should be treated as such. Obviously, purebloods are superior. Magic is the pureblood's birthright, passed down from parent to child - what right does the mudblood have to go against their very nature and try to adopt wizarding ways? The idea of a Muggleborn witch or wizard equaling Barty in skill and power is outrageously silly to him. Half-bloods can be tolerated - at least they have one magical parent. A blood traitor, but magical nonetheless, and Barty doesn't believe in passing down the sins of the father onto the son. If the half-blood in question sticks to the right path, marrying another half-blood or perhaps into whatever pureblood family will accept them, perhaps eventually their offspring will have enough magical heritage within them to be considered pure. If, on the other hand, the half-blood sides with the Muggle or mudblood parent and begins demanding equal treatment for Muggleborns, they are to be treated with as much disdain as one would treat a mudblood. In short, Barty feels that Muggles are inferior to wizards in every way, and that wizards must assert their dominance through force, if necessary. They are lesser beings, perhaps of the same species but nowhere near on the same level as a wizard, and they must be made to realize and accept their inferiority or else face obliteration. |
Appearance |
APPEARANCE:The first thing most people notice about Barty is the expression on his face. Usually, there isn’t one, except for eyes, which are blue, and which express the purest, most powerful intensity possible. It can make him look a little crazy, the way he just stares at you, almost unblinking, with an energy so driven and focused that it’s hard to meet his gaze. Being of average height (5’7”) and a rather scrawny frame, there’s not much about Barty that’s that intimidating - except for those eyes. Those eyes could haunt a person’s soul - and don’t think Barty’s not completely aware of that. He knows, and he uses it to his advantage. His blond hair is kind of floppy. It sort of just sits in a mess on the top of his head. Barty’s never really cared enough to take good care of it. It almost gives him a kind of “cute” look, and makes one want to reach out and ruffle it. Don’t do that, unless you’re a big fan of pain. Barty has no real mannerisms. No drumming of the fingers, no jiggling of the leg, no restlessness. Instead, he stands (or sits) eerily still, completely unmoving save for the rise and fall of his chest. Combined with the stare, it tends to freak people out. |
Personality |
| WAND: 12 1/4 inches, hickory, phoenix feather, flexible. BOGGART: His father discovering that he's a Death Eater. Barty has long outgrown the need to please his father and beg for his attention, but there's a tiny part of him, way back and hidden in his heart, that still cares what Bartemius Sr. thinks. Besides, the old man's a Ministry worker. Getting caught by him would surely mean imprisonment, death, or a fate worse than death. PATRONUS: Coyote, symbolizing cleverness, ingenuity, and skill. When he's able to cast one, he thinks of the letter he got informing him of his 12 OWLs, a feat he worked hard to accomplish. One of the few times his father expressed pride and approval towards him. Not that that matters. Nope. It's totally just all that hard work paying off. Keep the game's premise in mind while filling out the areas below. Strengths and weaknesses can include anything from things like cooking, charms, and allergies to what gets under their skin most of all. LIKES: Classical music, especially from the Baroque period. Learning things. Achieving things. Praise from the Dark Lord. People who aren't idiots. Cats. Cold weather (he likes the chill, although he doesn't like rain). Subtlety. Sarcasm. Wit. Being a Death Eater. DISLIKES: Muggles. Muggle music. Mudbloods. Needless distractions. Children. His father. Being anything less than his absolute best. Surprises. Gryffindors and their excessive acts of bravery and bravado. Divination. Stupidity. Those who have brawn but not brains (he admits such people have their uses - better them dying then him, after all, and brute strength can be an asset - but that doesn't mean he has to like the morons). Excessive cheerfulness. Puns. Being called "Bart". STRENGTHS: 1) Reading people. Barty is very skilled at figuring out how other people are really feeling or whether they're hiding something and using that to his advantage. 2) Acting. In another life, Barty might have found a home on The West End. He's very good at pretending to be someone he isn't, and he's an excellent liar. 3) Manipulation. WEAKNESSES: 1) At times, keeping his temper. Barty's normally pretty good about putting up with people he dislikes, but gradually the irritation and anger builds up until he snaps. 2) He's not good at hiding the fact that he doesn't care about something. He fails epically when it comes to feigning interest. 3) Herbology. He got the OWL, but just barely. Planting things, growing things, living off the land - these are things Barty cannot do. 4) He's allergic to bee stings. 5) Physically, he's not very strong. At all. KNOWN INFORMATION: Barty can't exactly hide that he's the child of a major Ministry official, seeing as his father had the brilliant idea to share his name with his son. Apart from the fact that he exists and that Bartemius Sr. says he's intelligent, not much is known by the general population about Barty. He doesn't go around waving a big Death Eater flag. He'll voice his views on blood purity if asked, but he keeps silent on the topic of the Dark Lord. Most people would expect him to eventually become a Ministry official like his father. The fact that he's a Death Eater would cause a big scandal for Bartemius Sr. Because of an anger-induced slip-up, Barty was spotted without his mask. The Order knows he's a Death Eater, but that knowledge hasn't become common knowledge within the general populace as of yet. DETAILED PERSONALITY: To other people, Barty can seem somewhat of an enigma. He’s usually cool and collected, but “calm” is difficult to apply to him once you’ve met his gaze. Barty is an intense individual. Everything he feels, he feels passionately and deeply. Everything he does, he does with a sense of purpose and a sense that what he is doing is not only necessary, but For the Greater Good. Barty didn’t join up with the Death Eaters because he likes killing or torturing (although he’s not averse to them; they’re necessary tools, that’s all). He joined because Lord Voldemort promised a brighter future for the pureblood society, and because he sincerely, deeply believes in that future. For Barty, there is no staying “neutral” on any issue. You’re either for it or against it. You’re either with us or against us. Because, in reality, Barty lives in a world of ideals. “Idealistic” might not be a typical term for a Death Eater, but in Barty’s case, it’s perfectly true - the ideals are just different from what the ideals of a Ministry worker or Order member might be. In Barty’s ideal world, wizards - real wizards, not mudbloods - would reign. The mudbloods and Muggles would be put in their place: at the bottom of the heap. And Barty himself would be near the top, because of his great service to the Dark Lord and because of his never-wavering devotion to the cause. While he’s not the happy psychopathic torturing murderer, Barty does enjoy toying with people. He’s quite good at it, too. He has a natural knack for reading other people, figuring them out, discovering things about them that they wouldn’t normally reveal. He’s a brilliant actor, capable of adopting any persona or attitude in order to get what he wants or what the Death Eaters need, and he excels when it comes to deceit. He’s a master manipulator, a brilliant bluffer, and he does it all without exerting any real effort. Barty is, admittedly, paranoid. And as a Death Eater, who says that his fears are unjustified? He cares so much and so deeply about the work that he’s doing that he’s honestly terrified of everything falling apart even more than it already has after the defeat of the Dark Lord. Because of this, he doesn’t share secrets with anyone. Having someone learn something, anything about him that he doesn’t want them to know makes him feel vulnerable and weak - and he hates that feeling. Barty has a brilliant mind, and he knows it. He’s not egotistical about it, but he does sometimes radiate a smug sense of superiority. He is extremely intelligent, absorbs information quickly, and thinks things through before he does them. Some might say that joining the Death Eaters means that a great mind is going to waste, but Barty believes the contrary - what better place for a great mind than with the people who are going to bring about a new utopia? He has some anger issues. Barty lets frustration and irritation build up and up and up until he simply can’t take it anymore, and the littlest thing could set him off. Like any other emotion, Barty feels anger deeply, so it’s no surprise that he explodes in a way that some might call “rabid” or “crazy”. He’s truly frightening when he’s in this state, and it’s best to just avoid him until he calms down. When Barty sets his mind on something, he makes absolutely sure that it gets done. He hates distractions, derailments, and anything that breaks his focus. Joking around? Wandering off to kill or torture some random Muggle that has nothing to do with the current objective just because it’s fun? This will very likely cause Barty to snap. |
History |
CHILDHOOD: If Bartemius Crouch, Sr. had paid even just a little more attention to his son, Barty could have turned out much differently. Instead of running around with Death Eaters, he might be working for the Ministry, following in his father’s footsteps. Merlin knows he’s intelligent enough and savvy enough to excel there. But Bartemius Sr. wasn’t much of a father, and while Rebecca did her best to be a good mother, she was too weak-willed to have much of an impact on Barty’s life. In many ways, his parents’s absence in his life shaped the man he became. In their eyes, they would see it as creating a monster. In Barty’s opinion, well, they gave him just enough freedom to make up his own mind and go confidently in the direction of his ambitions. Barty’s childhood was a lonely one. His parents were well-off - not Malfoy or Black rich, but rich enough that their house was lavish, they owned a house elf, Winky, and they never needed to worry about finances. Before Hogwarts, he didn’t have any friends. At the time, he didn’t mind. He spent his time in the house’s library instead, reading everything he could about magic. It was here, not from his parents, that the idea of pureblood superiority was imprinted onto his brain. Barty found numerous tracts on the subject, and devoured them all. He had never met a Muggleborn before, let alone an actual Muggle, but his opinions of them were quickly formed by the things that he read. By the time he reached Hogwarts, his opinions on Muggles and Muggleborns - mudbloods - was full formed. HOGWARTS: Barty was Sorted into Slytherin house, which came as a surprise to no one. The Sorting Hat considered putting him into Ravenclaw due to his eagerness to know everything, but his cunning and ambition ensured that he would find a place in Slytherin. It was the first time he had had friends. Not just friends, but pureblood friends, friends who shared his views. For the first time, Barty felt truly happy. He felt like he belonged. Barty excelled in school. He did ridiculously, audaciously well in his classes - some better than others (he was worst with Herbology and Divination, and best with Transfiguration and Defense Against the Dark Arts), but overall very well. He earned a whopping 12 OWLs, something that, for once, briefly caught his father’s attention. But the praise from his father, while sincere, didn’t last long; soon enough Bartemius Sr. was back to being caught up in the affairs of the Ministry. It was around this time that Barty completely and finally gave up on trying to connect with his father. It simply wasn’t going to happen, it was time to let go, and Barty knew it. With his father now out of the picture, Barty became more and more interested in the whispered conversations in the Slytherin common room - something about a new Dark Lord who had their interests in mind. Barty started asking questions, and soon enough he was converted to the cause. POST-HOGWARTS: Barty entered the ranks of the Death Eaters very shortly after his graduation. He got a job as a waiter in a restaurant in Diagon Alley in order to meet his father’s insistence that despite their affluence, Barty should have a job. After Voldemort’s defeat, Barty was at a loss for what to do until he discovered the quest for the Horcruxes, which he immediately embarked upon. During his experience in America, Barty was recognized by an Order member. To be sure that this information did not leave the Order, and to ease his father's suspicions, he returned to England. He rejoined the Death Eaters in Egypt. |
Just for fun |
FIVE THINGS: Five things you've always wanted to RP out/explore about this character but have never gotten the chance to do before, why you picked this character, things you're most looking forward to playing out with this character, etc. Try to include at least one plot idea for your character. Providing this information helps the mod and other players build plots around your character. • Reason 1 I haven't played a Death Eater character since before Greatest Journal went down. I got my start playing darker characters; it'd be nice to return to my roots for a bit. Plus, I want to explore what makes him tick. • Reason 2 I want to explore his relationship with his family, especially if it would be possible to get a Bartemius Sr. Barty really has a messed up relationship with his father, which had a hand in him looking to Voldemort for answers. If it's discovered that Barty's a Death Eater, which I'm totally open to happening... it would be awesome, I think. • Reason 3 I have this fondness for manipulative, cunning, twisted characters. Barty impersonated Moody for a school year in the presence of two Legilimens (Snape and Dumbledore) and successfully rigged the Twiwizard Tournament. He clearly knows how to manipulate, which is FUN FOR ME. Plot point? Finding Barty some minds to warp and twist, or using his skills of deception and trickery to an advantage, will make me giddy. • Reason 4 He's brilliant. He did what's mentioned in Reason 4 after years of considerable mental decline, implying that he was even more brilliant before all that, and he recieved 12 OWLs, a feat that even Hermione couldn't accomplish. HERMIONE. I mean, seriously. • Reason 5 I want to see how he interacts with the other Death Eaters. He's very focused and mission-oriented, and anyone deviating from whatever Plan has been established in order to have some fun torturing Muggles or whatever will piss him off. He takes his role very seriously and has little patience for anyone who doesn't. STRANDED: Thing 1 His wand. He feels vulnerable without it, and besides, it would be an extremely useful tool. Thing 2 A pocket watch given to him by his mother before he left for Hogwarts his first year. Apparently it was some kind of heirloom or something on her side of the family, and she passed it on to him. More important than all that sentimental stuff, it would allow him to keep time, which would help him stay Thing 3 Some books on Transfiguration or the Dark Arts. Stuck on an island, what else is he going to do but read? Stranded With: Ideally, no one. There's no one that Barty cares enough about to yank them out of their world and plop them down onto an island with him. Anyone who even begins to qualify is too important to The Cause for Barty to want them on an island with him. Living Hell: Bartemius Crouch, Sr. Hell, Barty can barely stand to be in the same room with his father. Trapped on an island, no way to get off it, for who knows how long? Barty would rather kiss a Dementor. |
